Can you use a Quest 2 on a cruise ship?
Not long ago I took a cruise on Holland America Line to the Caribbean, and being the adventurous technology lover that I am I chose to bring my VR headset, the Oculus Quest 2. As it turns out, it's completely OK to take the headset on the cruise ship with you. Related, the TSA didn't even blink as my headset rolled through security. All is well on the security front.
VR on an airplane, for what should be obvious reasons, is awkward. It is doable, but probably only for things like Netflix or something to simulate a big screen TV. Beat Saber is right out of the question.
Your headset will of course work fine in the hotel room the night before your cruise. If you're lucky you might even be able to stream your gameplay to the hotel room's television and let your cruise partner(s) enjoy some of the fun too!
But, how about on a cruise ship? Your stateroom surely has enough room for you to stand and swing at things, right? Well, here's what I discovered: It depends. If the ship is underway (that is to say, moving), the Quest will sense the ship's movement and you won't be able to set a room scale space to play in. In my experimentation, the ship was in moderately rough seas and we were moving at just over 18 knots at the time. The motion of the ship was enough to send my roomscale virtual floor, and then later my stationary "standing only" virtual bubble, down a dozen feet to vanish somewhere behind and below me. Effectively I had no more functionality than I would have had on an airplane. Now, on the other hand, when the ship is in port, it's a rather different story: You won't have time for VR because your ship's in port and you'll be going to enjoy the local flavors! So... technically yes, the headset will work if the ship is sitting still, and I have no business telling you what to do so... go nuts if you want, but for what it's worth, my Quest wound up in its case on a shelf for most of the trip. When the ship was calm enough for me to get my VR on, I was busy going ashore to visit one of the many beautiful Caribbean islands.
My advice: Worth bringing if you're going to have to spend some time in a hotel room on land, but otherwise leave it locked in your big suitcase. It won't work very well when the ship's moving, and when the ship isn't moving, you won't have time for it.
